Knoxville, Tennessee native Clifford Curry joined R&B act the Echoes as a high school senior in 1955, traveled Northeast with them, and composed the semi-hit "Mr. Moon" the following year after they were signed to Savoy Records and became the Five Pennies. Returning to Nashville after the release of several more chart disappointments, Curry soon joined the Bingos (later Hollyhocks) and with them recorded several singles for Excello subsidiary Nasco.
